LE "Gole dell' alcantara" The "Gorges of the Alcantara"

The Gole dell'Alcantara are gorges on the river Alcantara in Sicily. They are up to twenty meters deep and four to five meters wide and have devoured for thousands of years in the lava rock of nearby Etna.

The lava rock is one of the most characteristic features of the gorges. The walls are basaltic lava, which is low in silicon and rich in iron, magnesium and calcium. A slowly cooling lava flow enabled the emergence of the prismatic, pentagonal and hexagonal pillars.

The gorges are located on the state road 185 between Taormina / Giardini Naxos and Randazzo, just before Francavilla di Sicilia.
